Traditional dessert parlour Imojin in Nezu serves nostalgic Japanese sweets, from fragrant wafer monaka filled with ogura or vanilla ice cream to avec anmitsu with 2 ice creams and red pea mamekans.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Crisp, fragrant wafer shells filled on the spot with chilled ogura red bean or vanilla ice cream make the ice monaka at Imojin a natural pause while wandering Nezu. Sold at accessible prices and handed over without fuss, the wafer offers an airy crunch and a light, refreshing finish that suits casual neighbourhood snacking.
For those taking a table inside the shop, the Avec Anmitsu is a centrepiece of the menu. Scoops of vanilla and ogura ice cream sit side by side against translucent cubes of agar jelly, sweet red bean paste, and syrup, allowing their contrasting sweetness and cold temperatures to meld together. Guests who prefer to focus solely on the ice cream can opt for the standalone Avec Ice, with extra monaka wafers available to assemble hand-held bites at the table.
For an austere balance of agar and beans, the mamekans served with salted red peas and dark brown sugar syrup are well worth ordering. Variations let diners tailor the dish to their tastes, including Ogura Mamekan topped with sweet bean ice cream and An-mamekan accompanied by smooth strained red bean paste. In cooler months, comfort comes in hot bowls of Gozen Shiruko, pairing roasted rice cakes with smooth, refined red bean soup, or freshly grilled Showa-yaki filled with chunky sweet adzuki bean paste.
In addition to dine-in service, takeaway packs of anmitsu and mamekan are available to take home, making this an unpretentious sweet shop to drop into during everyday neighborhood walks or after visiting local shrines.
